Menard County spans 902 square miles of rolling terrain on the Edwards Plateau, with elevations ranging from 1,700 to 2,400 feet above sea level. The area features dark, loamy soils that are alkaline, supporting vegetation such as live oak, juniper, mesquite, and various grasses. It lies entirely within the Colorado River basin and is predominantly drained by the San Saba River, which flows from west to east across the county. The region is rich in wildlife, including deer (including exotic breeds that have moved into the area from neighboring hunting ranches), turkey, javelina, squirrels, coyotes, bobcats, beavers, opossums, badgers, foxes, raccoons, skunks, and a wide variety of birds, fish, and reptiles.
