History
Nez Perce Homeland: The area was originally named Lahmatta (meaning “area with little snow”) by the local Lamátta band of the Nez Perce tribe. The region took its name from Chief White Bird (Peopeo Kiskiok Hihih, or White Goose), a prominent spiritual and war leader. [1, 2]
Gold Rush: Non-Indian settlement in the canyon began during the 1860s after gold was discovered in the surrounding mountains, bringing miners, homesteaders, and livestock raisers to the Salmon River area. [1, 2]
The Battle of White Bird Canyon (1877)
Date: June 17, 1877. [1]
The Conflict: Triggered by disputes over the U.S. government’s forced relocation of non-treaty Nez Perce bands to the Lapwai Reservation. Captain David Perry led 106 U.S. cavalry soldiers and 11 volunteers into the canyon to confront the tribal band. [1, 2, 3]
The Engagement: A civilian volunteer fired a shot at a Nez Perce peace party carrying a white flag, sparking an immediate battle. [1, 2]
The Outcome: Roughly 70 Nez Perce warriors skillfully outmaneuvered the U.S. troops, forcing a disorganized military retreat. Thirty-four U.S. soldiers died, while the Nez Perce suffered no fatalities and recovered dozens of abandoned firearms. This clash initiated the historic 1,200-mile Nez Perce Flight
