Recreation

Few places offer the variety of outdoor recreation found around Kiliuda Bay. Protected saltwater provides outstanding fishing for king, coho, pink, and chum salmon, along with halibut, lingcod, Pacific cod, and several species of rockfish. The surrounding mountains, beaches, and river systems provide exceptional opportunities for Sitka black-tailed deer hunting, sea duck hunting, kayaking, hiking, wildlife photography, and bear viewing. The bay also serves as an excellent base for exploring the rugged coastline and countless coves that make Kodiak Island one of Alaska’s premier outdoor destinations.

History

The site has served as a base for outdoor recreation for decades, with some of the original structures dating back to the late 1960s and early 1970s. The surrounding region reflects Kodiak Island’s long history, beginning with the Alutiiq people thousands of years ago, followed by Russian settlement and the growth of Alaska’s commercial fishing industry after the Alaska Purchase in 1867.
