With nearly 777,000 acres, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S at only 48 miles long and 37 miles wide. It's nicknamed "The Ocean State," since around 14% of its total area is underwater in the form of large bays and inlets. Rhode Island has two distinct geographical regions—the coastal lowlands in the east and the New England uplands in the west. The state has a tidal shoreline of over 350 miles, and oceanfront property on the rocky coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean remains some of its most coveted real estate. Narragansett Bay is also home to more than 30 islands, the largest being Aquidneck Island. When you travel away from the coast, the land is marked by rolling hills, higher elevations, and woodlands. Much of the heavily forested acreage provides recreational opportunities like hunting, hiking, snow skiing, and mountain biking.
